Elkader Register, Thur., 24 July 1924. From the Otis Independent, Otis, Colorado, undated.

The following obituary of a former Clayton county resident is taken from the Otis Independent, published at Otis, Colorado.

"A shadow was cast over the community last Thursday by the death of Mrs. Max Ruegnitz, who died at her home south of Otis at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10th, after an illness of several weeks. On July 5th about 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon she suffered a paralytic stroke from which she never revived.

Mrs. Ruegnitz will be missed by her many friends in this part of the country as she was prominent in all social gatherings, a consistent church worker, always ready and willing to lend her assistance in anything for the community welfare and was ever willing to come to the aid of those in need. She was a loving wife and mother and a true friend.

For several years she wrote "Iowa" items for the Independent. Her writing will appear no more, but there are a large number of readers of this paper who will miss that particular feature, as she had a style all her own and a system that covered her territory exceptionally well. Perhaps some of our readers have wondered why she called her items "Iowa," it was for the reason that there are several former Iowans in that community and because the editor of the paper first saw the light of God's earth in Clayton County, Iowa. It made a combination too good to overlook.

Mrs. Reugnitz was born in Clayton County, Iowa, February 11, 1857, and died at her home south of Otis July 10th, 1924, being at the time of her death 67 years, 4 months and 29 days of age.

On June 2nd, 1881, she was united in marriage to Max Reugnitz; to this union two children were born, one daughter and one son, Mrs. Marie Pressey of Remore, Oregon, and Karl F. of Denver, Colo. Mrs. Pressey was unable to be with her mother at the time of her death, but Karl came a few hours before she suffered the stroke and remained with her until the time of her death. Besides her husband, two of her brothers, John and Ed. Kuempel, of Guttenberg, Ia., were at her bedside, her brothers arriving a few days before she passed away.

Funeral services were conducted from the Yeager Mortuary, 50 Sherman St. at Speer Boulevard, Denver, and interment was made beside her son, Karl's wife, who passed to the Great Beyond last Thanksgiving day, this being Mrs. Ruegnitz's request some time before her death."
