Special to the Times-Journal. McGregor, Ia., May 1 - Henry P. Brooks, an old soldier and resident of McGregor, died at his residence in this city Friday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock. Mr. Brooks was born in Shanango county, New York, Dec. 11, 1829, and came west to this place in 1850.
In 1857 he was united in marriage to Miss Ann Wanzer, of McGregor. Four children came to bless this union, three of whom still survive: Mrs. Frank Tipp, Miss Ida Brooks, and Charles M. Brooks, all of McGregor. His wife also still survives him.
In 1862 he enlisted in the First Iowa cavalry at McGregor, and served four years, being mustered out at Austin, Texas, in 1866, when he returned home.
Deceased was a carpenter, learning his trade in New York state, and having followed this occupation until two years ago, when he was compelled to retire owing to his age and ill health. Eighteen days ago he was confined to his bed and has been seriously sick up to the time of his death. Funeral services will be held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W.E. Mann, of the First Congregational church, officiating, and interment will take place in Oakland cemetery at McGregor.

Note: Oakland cemetery is now known as Pleasant Grove cemetery. His wife's full name was Rebecca Ann Wanzer. She died in 1918.
