Elkader Register, Thur., 5 June 1924.

George Walter was born July 16, 1870, in the Township of Wagner, Clayton County, Iowa, on the Michael Walter Homestead where he resided all his life except the last four months he lived in Farmersburg. He bought this farm after the death of his father which occurred 20 years ago. His mother made her home there until she passed away a year ago last January.

In former years he attended the services in the United Brethern Church, also attended the Roberts Creek Evangelical Church and took part in the Sunday School.

He took seriously sick last September and on Oct. 10th it was found necessary to undergo an operation to amputate a leg. About four weeks later the other foot had to be taken off also. These were severe trials for Mr. Walter to go through and caused him much pain and suffering, but he bore it all patiently. One thing that helped him at this time is that he kept up courage and never wanted to give up but made a noble fight to live. He never complained of his suffering.

When he became thus helpless, he rented his farm and moved to Farmersburg last January. Here he did fairly well, was gaining strength and was looking ahead to the time that he would be able to walk on artificial limbs. He was hopeful and happy until last Monday noon he suffered a stroke after which he was not able to speak. Death followed the next day in the evening a little before 10 o'clock, May 27, 1924. He attained the age of 53 years, 10 months and 11 days. One brother died when 10 years old.

He leaves two brothers, William and Philip Walter, who reside in the town of Wagner; five sisters, Mary and Louise Walter, who lived with him and took care of him during his many weeks of illness; Barbara, Mrs. Mel Henkes of Cresco; Verena, Mrs. Wm. Eno of Sheffield; and Cora, Mrs. Louis Krambeer of Grand Meadow township; besides other relatives and friends.

Services were held Friday at the home in Farmersburg and in the United Brethern Church, which was very largely attended. Rev. O. A. Hillman of Monona officiated. The nephews acted as pall bearers and nieces were flower girls. Burial in cemetery by the church.
