Bertha Sophia Bahls, beloved wife of Max Bahls of Garnavillo passed away at the Postville Hospital last Thursday, May 22, 1924, at 10:00 a.m. after an illness of two years duration of Bright's disease at the age of 48 years, 1 month and 23 days.

Mrs. Bertha Sophia Bahls was born March 29, 1876, in Guest, Pomerania, Germany, the eldest child of Mr. Niemann and wife Sophia, nee Holtberg.

She was united in marriage on November 11, 1899, to Max Bahls at Greifswald, Germany, and came to America in 1903 arriving at Garnavillo on June 23.

A few years ago she submitted to several operations at Elkader and Postville and also sought medical aid at Rochester, Minnesota.

She is survived by her husband Max Bahls and ten children, Arthur aged 24, Walter, Willie, Verni, Cora, Esther, Emma, Carl, Anita, and Lawrence aged four. One child, Arnold, preceded the mother in death.

She was a faithful wife, a good mother and devoted Christian and will be missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at St. Paul's Lutheran church at Garnavillo and interment was made in the new cemetery at Garnavillo. Rev. K. W. Braun of Garnavillo officiated at the church and Rev. C. H. Franke of Elkader spoke at the grave.
