Elkader Register, Thur., 12 June 1924.

Rose Alice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. O'Brien Sr. was born in Elkader, Ia., March 30th, 1887, and departed this life June 5th, 1924.

She attended St. Joseph's school in Elkader and received her first Communion there. After finishing the parochial school she attended the Elkader High School and later the High School at Watertown, S. Dakota, and at Volga, Iowa. She was for several years a successful teacher in the schools of Clayton County.

Everything that medical science and loving hands could do for the mother and babe was of no avail and they departed this life in the early morning of June 5th. She has gone to her Heavenly Home, carrying her babe in her arms.

About eight years ago she opened a restaurant in Volga and owing to her pleasing personality and marked business ability, soon became one of our foremost business women. She took a very prominent part in the activities of the Commercial Club, and was ever willing to do anything for the betterment of the town and community.

On April 29, 1919, she was united in marriage to H. G. White of Volga.

On the evening of June 4 she gave birth to a daughter whom she preceded death but a few short hours.

That one in such apparent good health should so suddenly be taken from our midst is hard to believe. Only last Wednesday she was in her place of business talking with her patrons and friends in her usual manner, young and old alike received a smile and friendly greeting.

But now she has left us, and the entire community joins with the sorrowing relatives in mourning her death.

Besides her husband she leaves her mother, Julia O'Brien; five sisters, Mrs. P. H. Quinn, Strawberry Point; Mrs. M. J. Hanlon, Walker, Iowa; Mrs. L. S. Quinn, Volga; Mrs. Vera O'Brien, New Orleans, La.; Mrs. Ernest Meyer, Elkader; five brothers, Will of Elkader; J. J. and T. F. of Chicago; and A. V. & F. L. of Volga. All the relatives were present at the funeral except Mrs. M. J. Hanlon and Mrs. Vera O'Brien.

The funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church, Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock.

In compliance with her wishes, solemn High Mass was sung by Father Casey, of Strawberry Point, as celebrant; Father Hetherington, of Volga, as deacon; and Father Taken, of Elkader, as sub-deacon.

Father Hetherington gave the sermon, extolling her religious virtues and praising her as a friend of all. Father Casey blessed the casket and Father Taken had charge by the services at the cemetery.

The high esteem in which she was held by the people of the community was evident from the beautiful floral offerings sent to the home and the great number of friends who attended the last rites.

The out of town relatives present at the funeral services were:

Mrs. Julia O'Brien, Walker; M. J. Hanlon; Mrs. Sumner Miller, Pine Bluff, Wyo.; Mr. and Mrs. Andy Bock, Waukon; Mrs. F. N. Adams, Mason City; Dr. G. G.
