C.M. Brooks Dies; Rites Yesterday
C.M. (Charley) Brooks, life-long McGregor citizen, former mayor, former county supervisor and for many years a business man in this community, died Monday morning, following a long illness. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Pilkington Funeral parlor with the Rev. F.E. Mastin officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove cemetery.
For many years a contractor, Charley built many of the buildings in this section. Later he served as a county supervisor and was responsible for considerable road building in the early days when road building was in its infancy in this county.
For a number of years he operated the Mallard Cafe and he made a name for the restaurant with his famous fish dinners.
In recent years he operated the boat livery at the foot of Main street.
He was McGregor town assessor for a number of years.
Charles M. Brooks was born May 3, 1878, a son of Henry and Rebecca Wanzer Brooks.
On August 8, 1899 he was married to Jennie Maud Presho of Marquette and one son, Robert, was born to them. Mrs. Brooks died in McGregor on April 17, 1904.
In 1922 he was married to Alice M. Clark, who survives him, along with his son Robert, one sister, Ida, a granddaughter Roberta and a grandson Charles and a great grandson, Joseph Brooks.
