Guttenberg, Ia. - Funeral services were held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon for Edward Henry Abel, 74, who died Saturday at the home of his son, Merle, following a short illness.
The services were conducted by the Rev. S.M. Becker, pastor of St. John's American Lutheran Church, at the home of Mr. Abel's son, Leighton. Burial was made in the Monona Cemetery.
Mr. Abel was born Jan. 3, 1869 near Garnavillo, the son of Herman H. and Augusta Opperman Abel. He was confirmed at the German Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.
On Sept. 24, 1891, he was married to Matilda Greenwaldt, who preceded him in death on March 1, 1909. After his marriage, he and Mrs. Abel moved to Monona, where they engaged in farming.
Mr. Abel moved to Guttenberg in 1911, and for five years he operated a shoe store here. He was married to Anna Greenwaldt, who also preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 1934.
Survivors include four sons: Lester, of Sheldon; Byron, of Monticello; and Leighton and Merle, both of Guttenberg.

Note: Other records spell the maiden name of his 2 wives as Gruenwald. He is buried with his 1st wife in the Monona City cemetery; his 2nd wife is buried in the Guttenberg City cemetery.
