Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Apr. 1891.
One by one the old settlers of Elkader are passing over to the great majority beyond the grave. The last to answer the dread summons was Edward Donovan, who passed away at an early hour last Friday morning, after several months sickness with cancer of the throat.
Mr. Donovan was born in Ireland in 1826, and was therefore 63 years of age. He came to the United States when a young man, locating first in one of the eastern states. Here he married, and in 1855 he came west, locating at Elkader, which place he has since made his home. Here he worked at his trade of stone mason until within a year or two, his last work having been done on the Elkader bridge.
Generous and kind hearted he was respected by all who knew him, and his death is greatly regretted by the entire community. His wife died some two years ago, but three daughters are left to mourn his loss.
The funeral took place on Saturday last from the Catholic church and was quite largely attended.
May he rest in peace !
