Mrs. Hiram Hammond, nee Eva Stoehr, was born March 2, 1831, in Weisenstadt, Germany, at the age of twenty-two she came to America. She began married life in 1855 on a farm in Volga twp.
Later, in 1884, she and her husband moved to a farm near Postville, where they resided during the remainder of their lives.
About six weeks ago Mrs. Hammond attended the wedding of her granddaughter, Ludelia Thoma, of this place, and while here was taken ill with a stroke of paralysis. She recovered, however, and returned to her home, and on Oct. 1st, at 8:30 p.m., her gentle spirit took its flight.
During her occasional visits with her daughter, Mrs. F. Thoma, of this place, she became well known by a number of acquaintances, who regret that she is no more and extend friendly feelings of sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
Funeral services occurred at Postville Wednesday morning and were conducted by Rev. Pohle, after which the remains were brought to Garnavillo and interred in the family lot in the new cemetery. Rev. Mall, of St. Peter's church, conducted a short service at the grave. Two sons, two daughters and a brother survive.
