Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Sept. 1906.
At about 6:30 Tuesday morning Henry Sturm, the well known Mederville well digger, met with an accident in which he lost his life.
As far as we can learn the sad particulars are that he was engaged in drilling a well on the Fritz farm near Littleport. He had been sawing wood for the engine, when he went to throw off the belt, or as some say to replace a belt that had come off, in some manner he was entangled in the belt and his right hand taken off above the wrist and his body flung against the engine with such force as to fracture his skull. Dr. McGrath was summoned from Elkader, but Mr. Sturm was dead before he reached the place, never having regained consciousness.
Deceased was a young man about 34 years old. He had built himself a home at Mederville, and by strict attention to his business was endeavoring to provide for his wife and three daughters. He was well known to many in Elkader and highly esteemed by all who knew him. Besides his own family he is survived by his mother, two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Otto Schelschmidt, of Elkader, being a sister.
Mr. Sturm was a member of the Yeoman lodge at Volga, and a neighbor of the M.W.A. lodge at Littleport. His funeral was held this afternoon from his late residence at Mederville, under the auspices of the M.W.A.
