Elkader Register, Thur., 26 July 1906.

In Sperry township, this county, July 19th, occurred the death of Mrs. John Dunn, one of Clayton county's oldest settlers.

Judith McDonnell was born in Queen county, Ireland, 86 years ago. She came to America during the exodus of the Irish people after the blight of the potato crop in 1846 - 1848. She was married soon afterward to John Dunn, at Allegheny, Pa. They first found employment on the line of the York and Erie R. R., from whence they came west, settling in Dyersville, Dubuque county, afterward moving to Clayton county during the war of the Rebellion, settling in Sperry township, where she lived until her death.

Mrs. Dunn was the mother of five children, four of whom survive her, the Eldest son, John, having died about thirteen years ago. The other children are Margaret, in religious, Sister Christinea of the Order of The Sisters of Mercy, (unreadable town name), Ia., Mollie, wife of John Hurley, Highland township, this county, William, occupying the old home, and Lizzie, Wife of John Malloy.

(next seven words unreadable) to describe the beautiful Christian and humanitarian characteristics of this most estimable woman, because she belonged to that class of good souls well known to all of us under whose benign influence and motherly affection we must come to at all appreciate their real worth. Indeed the highest tribute which can be bestowed upon her and one which she most ardently desired to deserve was frequently expressed by herself during her eight years of constant sickness and suffering "I am ready." then adding with the great apostle, of whom she was a faithful disciple. "I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith, and now awaits me a crown of glory with my Lord, Jesus Christ." May her expectations be realized.
