Elkader Register, Thur., 30 Mar. 1905. Garnavillo column.

The friends of Mrs. Marting were sorrowfully informed last Wednesday of her death at her home three and one half miles north of town. Several months ago Mrs. Marting was taken sick with cancer of the stomach. All the careful nursing and medical aid she received seemed of no avail and the inevitable end was expected. Deceased, nee Wilhelmina Meerhoff, was born Nov. 15th, 1830 in Westerenga, Prussia. She grew to womanhood in a Christian parental home. In 1849 she was married to Gerhard Henry Marting. Together they had left their native country in 1848 and came to America. For two years they lived at Portland, Ohio, and then journeyed to Clayton county, where they have since resided on a farm. Mr. Marting died Jan. 12th, 1894. Eleven children were born to them, of which four died of scarlet fever within three weeks. Those remaining are: Anna, married to John H. Bierbaum, residing at Griswald, Ia.; Henry Marting, married to Anna Meier, residing at Luana; Mary, to J. H. Ziegler, residing at Luana; Christ Marting, to Minnie Milewsky, residing north of town; Juliana, to Herman Werger, at National; Caroline, to Fred Kersteen, at McGregor; and Louis, at home. It is sad where a kind and loving mother who has done all in her power to obtain worthy ends is called away, breaking up the fond ties of home, and we extend sympathy to the sorrowing family. Rev. Braun conducted the funeral services which took place Saturday afternoon.
