Elkader Register, Thur., 1 Nov. 1900. Garnavillo column.

The loveliest flowers that greet the sun,
With colors bright and gay,
Or open to the moonlight pale -
All these will fade away.

Such was the thought that came to mind when the news of Mrs. Christ Marting's death overshadowed the community. 'Twas only last December when the last fair morning for her maiden eyes appeared, the glorious wedding bells were sounded and the portals of paradise opened to the fair bride and groom. Only a few short months were given for their happiness and the loved one ceased to be. She was sick about three weeks and everything in human power was done for her - a hired nurse and two doctors were in attendance, but a place in the beautiful new home was soon vacated, and the sorrowing husband is left to await the future good that at present is concealed.

The deceased probably better known as Amanda Hamann, daughter of John Hamann and wife, was born Nov. 14th, 1875 in Jefferson twp., and thus was about twenty-five years old at the time of her death. The esteem which was entertained for her was shown by the number of beautiful flowers she received and by the vast concourse of relatives and friends that accompanied her to the grave. She is mourned by a husband, her parents, a sister, Bertha, two brothers, John and Henry, the latter of Chicago, and grandparents of Talmage, Neb., besides many acquaintances.

Not now but in the coming years,
It may be in the better land;
We'll read the meaning of our tears,
And there sometime we'll understand.

We'll catch the broken threads again,
And finish what we here began.
Heaven will the mysteries explain,
And then, ah then, we'll understand.

We'll know why clouds instead of sun,
Came over many a cherished plan;
Why song has ceased when scarce begun
'Tis there, sometime, we'll understand.
