Elkader Register, Thur., 1 June 1905. Garnavillo News column.
Johanna Luise Auguste Roeben, nee Koehler, was born August 12th, 1864, in Jueterbog, Province Brandenberg, Germany. After having finished schooling she was active in Charity Hospital in Berlin, where she graduated as a trained nurse. In 1889 she left her native country and came to New York where she was employed in different families until 1891, when she married Frederick Roeben, her surviving husband. In the course of time ten children were born to them - eight girls and two boys, among them two pair of twins - all of whom are living. In 1892 the family came to Iowa and lived on a small farm near Elkader. Two years later they moved to the vicinity of Elkport. In the same year deceased received a rupture which finally caused her death. She sank to heavenly rest Sunday at 4:30 a.m. Burial service took place the following day, Rev. Bunge officiating. Interment in the old cemetery. It is very sad indeed where a mother is taken from a family of small children, but the ways of Providence are ever most wise and the trials of this life must be submitted to and borne with patience and sometime, somewhere, we'll understand. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.
(Note: See obituary of Johann Frederick Roeben 1868 - 1937, that lists children.)
