John F. Downey died at Lenth's hospital at Elkader Saturday morning, a few hours after an operation. He was ill only one day; was in perfect health until Friday morning when he was taken seriously sick. Dr. White was called and thought an operation was the only hope of saving his life. He was conveyed by auto to Elkader at once and all that medical skill could do was done, but all to no avail. He died a few hours after the operation.

John Downey was born in Garnavillo Township on Nov. 29, 1870, and was the youngest son of Michael and Margaret Downey. He was married two times. His first marriage was at West Union, Iowa, to Miss Allie Sheehan, who died on March 3, 1906. He was again united in marriage to Annie Franke at McGregor, Iowa, on April 19, 1909.

Jack, as he was familiarly called, was of a friendly and jovial disposition and will be greatly missed by his many friends. He is survived by his wife, three brothers and one sister, Thomas of California, William, of Volga Twp., James on the old homestead in Garnavillo Twp., Mary O'Connor, of Garber.

His burial took place Monday in the Catholic Cemetery at Elkader, Iowa. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.J. Reilly. May his soul rest in peace.
