Elkader Register, Thur., 1 Mar. 1906. Guttenberg column.
Last Tuesday the sad news of the death of Wm. Fahling was received from the Independence hospital where the young man had been sent for treatment. For the past three years he has been afflicted with severe nervous attacks and at times these almost unbalanced his mind. After the attack would pass over he would then be himself for a time. It was at last thought best by his physician that he be taken to the hospital where he could receive the attention of nerve specialists and the consistent care of trained nurses. This was done a short time ago but everything that medical skill and tender care could do availed nothing and the young man died as above stated of meningitis. William was born in Guttenberg Nov. 10, 1873, grew to manhood in our midst and was well thought of by all who knew him. He was of a retired disposition and scarcely ever indulged in the wild caprices of the "young America." He graduated in the class of 1892 of the Guttenberg Public schools. Shortly after completing the course he went west where he learned the barber business. He returned and opened a shop in Guttenberg, but his nerve troubles made the work very difficult for him and finally he was compelled to abandon it altogether. He leaves a father, mother and one sister, Mrs. Fred N. Friedlein, to mourn his untimely death. He will be buried today (Friday) at 2 p.m. New Leaf Camp No. 537 M.W.A., of which he was a member, will officiate. The remains will be buried in the City cemetery.
