Monona, Ia. - Funeral services for Mrs. Christina Bentien, 94, were held at the Rudolph Englehardt home here Friday afternoon. The Rev. H.W. Siefkes, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated and burial was in the City Cemetery.

As Christina Carlson, she was born in Osnatjup, Sweden, on Jan. 24, 1846, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Magni Carlson. When 8 years old she went to Hamburg, Germany to work and in 1873 she was married there to Heinrich Christian Bentien. Eleven years later they came to America, settling on a farm near Luana where they lived until 1910 when they retired and came to Monona.

Mr. Bentien died Oct. 17, 1923. Since then she made her home with her daughters.

Mrs. Bentien died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Englehardt, following a lingering illness.

Surviving are five children: Mrs. Lizzie Hack, Mrs. Hanna Fick, and Mrs. Englehardt, all of Monona; Mrs. Dora Sargent of Little Falls, Minn. and Henry of Spencer, S.D.; two sisters, Mrs. David Nyman of Minneapolis and Mrs. Mathilda Appel of Monona; a brother, August Carlson in Sweden; 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

1930, 84th birthday article, with photo of Mrs. Bentien:

Monona, Ia., Jan. 30 - Mrs. Christina Bentien celebrated her eighty-fourth birthday Friday. Relatives surprized (sic) her at the home of her daughter Friday afternoon and a dinner was served. A large birthday cake with 84 candles was lighted. Those attending the party were: Mesdames Gilbert Rose, Katherine Bentien, Rudolph W. Engelhardt, Ida H. Bentien, Albert Fick and William Vullgraf, Sr., Miss Adaline Engelhardt.

Mrs. Bentien was born in Sweden in 1846 and when a girl went to Germany were she met Henry C. Bentien, to whom she was married. In 1884 they came to this country and have since lived in or near Monona. Mrs. Bentien was the mother of nine children, four daughters and one son are living, also 27 grand children and 12 great-grandchildren.
