Ellen Irwin Tapper was a native of Ireland, born in Glasough [sic], March 28, 1814, and, with relatives, came to New York, where on September 13, 1838, she was united in marriage to James Tapper.
Two years later the young people landed at McGregor, and in 1841 selected a tract of land in Giard township, this county. This was the home of the family for about fifty years, for a brief time following the death of the husband in 1887*, when Monona became the home of the mother and children, Mrs. Tapper taking up her residence with her daughter, Mrs. Hester Egbert, with whom she has resided for the past twenty-five years.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Tapper, Mrs. Mary Boyce, of Franklin township; Wm. Tapper, of Pasadena, Cal.; James Tapper, John Tapper, George Tapper (deceased); and Mrs. Lade Russell, of Independence, Ia.; Mrs. Hester Egbert and David Tapper, of Monona.
Death came to this aged lady on the morning of June 13, 1912, two months and 22 days past her 98th birthday, the ending of a long and eventful life. The funeral was held on Saturday, June 15th from the home of Mrs. Hester Egbert, attended by a large concourse of friends and by a number of old settlers in other parts of the country. Rev. J.B. Bird, pastor of the M.E. church,, officiated.
