Elkader Register, Fri., 20 April 1883.

On Friday of last week at his home in Strawberry Point, occurred the death of D. M. Sterns, better known as Elder Sterns, one of the founders of that lively burg.

The deceased was born in the town of Wilmington, near Battleboro, Vt., 1807, and went to Chautauqua county, N.Y., at the age of twelve, with his father's family traveling with a team, he and his older brother going on foot most of the way. He joined the Methodist church when quite young, and prepared himself for the ministry at Meadville college, Penn. He belonged to the Erie conference at the time of his death. He came to Strawberry Point about the year 1856, and with his brother, W. H., laid out the town of Franklin, or Strawberry Point as it is called, and has since platted Sterns' addition to that town and together they erected the first building on that town site, where the hotel of Alex. Blake now stands.

He returned to Ohio nearly twenty years ago and took an active part in ministerial work. About five years ago he had a stroke of paralysis, and has been very feeble as well as a sufferer most of the time since. He also received a broken arm soon after the stroke of paralysis. He was an uncle of Mr. C. H. Sterns of this place, and was a man honored and esteemed by all with whom he came in contact. The funeral occurred on Sunday, and was very largely attended. May he rest in peace.
