Elkader Register, Fri., 20 April 1883.
On Saturday last, William Carter, proprietor of the Valley House, at Osborne, breathed his last, after a sickness of several week's duration. William Carter was born in Ireland, Nov. 30th, 1832, being at the time of his death a little over 50 years of age. He resided in Ireland until 1849, when he came to the United States, settling first at Cumberland, Md. From this place he went west, working in many places, but finally in 1863, settled at Osborne, where he resided until the time of his death.
In 1853 he was married to Miss Ella Hines, who bore him four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom are now living. She died September 9th, 186_ (looks like 3 or 5), and September 10th, 1869, he was married to Bridget O'Brien, who survives him.
Mr. Carter, was a whole-souled man, generous to a fault, and had many friends, who will mourn his death. The funeral occurred on Monday, his remains being laid away to their final rest in the Catholic cemetery at this place.
