Word has been received in Elkader of the death of Mel. B. Hodgkins, which occurred at his home in Roca, Lancaster county, Nebraska, on last Sunday morning. On the Sunday previous he was stricken with the lung fever, and after a week's painful struggle, passed to his eternal home.
Deceased was born in Grandisle, Grandisle county, Vermont, in 1828, being 55 years of age at the time of his death.
He lived there a number of years, and in 1849 he married, and the following year came west, his wife coming to Elkader with Mrs. Charles Muzzy, and he in company with his brother William continued the journey to California, joining in the stream that was then pouring into the "Golden State." After three years in California, he came to Elkader, and lived here for some twenty years, going to Nebraska about six years ago.

He was highly respected by all who knew him, and his death will be mourned by many of his old friends and companions in Elkader.
By his death he leaves a wife and several children, also one brother and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Muzzy, of this place, being one of the latter, to mourn the loss of a loving companion, kind father and dutiful brother.
May he rest in peace.
