John O'Brien, the subject of this sketch, was born Jan. 17th, 1844, at 21 Cook street, Dublin, Ireland. He came to America when a young lad with his widowed mother. In (looks like 1869) he was married to Julia Leonard, who survives him. To them were born twelve children, six boys and six girls, Mamie, wife of P. H. Quinn, of Cox Creek; Anna, Mrs. M. J. Hanlon, of Waterloo; Katie, Mrs. L. S. Quinn, of Cox Creek; Sarah, teaching at Lake Park, Iowa; and Agnes and Rose at Willow Lake, S.D. The boys are William and Thomas, of Elkader; John, Arthur and Frank, at home. One son died in infancy. He is also survived by one brother, Thomas, at Grindstone, S.D., and three sisters, Mrs. L. F. Weck, of Clermont; Mrs. Theo. Schmidt, of Elkader; and Mrs. J. P. McDermott, of Osborne.
He departed this life on Dec. 21st, 1903, after many weeks of patient suffering surrounded by his family and friends who came home to comfort and console him in his last hours. The funeral was held on Tuesday Dec. 22nd, from St. Joseph's church, at Elkader, Rev. J. F. Reilly officiating, in the presence of many old friends and neighbors. May he rest in peace.
