Elkader Register, Thur., 24 Dec. 1903. Volga City Views column.
Clifton Clare Ewing, son of Wm. and Anna Ewing, was born July 5th, 1892, in Highland twp., Clayton county, Ia., and died at his home, Dec. 19th, 1903, at the age of 11 years, 5 months and 14 days, after a brief illness of less than one week. He was a very bright energetic boy and a kind and loving son. He was deeply interested in the church and Sunday school, and his presence in the class was always a help to his teachers. He had been baptized and expected to be received into the church as he loved the children's best friend. During his last hours in quietly talking with his parents, he said, "I think it would be nice to die", but did not want to die if it would make them unhappy, and again he said, "I am not afraid to die." He will be missed in the home and in the school and Sunday school. He leaves to mourn his death his father, mother and little sister, Lura, grandparents, uncles and aunts and many friends.
The funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Volga, which sympathizing friends had very appropriately decorated with plants and flowers. A large congregation of friends was present to pay the last tribute of love to their little friend. The sermon was preached from the text, II Kings 42:6, "Is it well with the child ? And she answered.. It is well." The remains were laid to rest in the Volga cemetery Sunday Dec. 20th, 1903.
