Elkader Register, Thur., 3 Dec. 1903. Garnavillo column.

Louis Hartwig Sr. was born in Harsta, Hanover, Germany, Oct. 15th, 1834, and came to this country in his youth, stopping at Galena, Ill., where he learned the trade of harnessmaker.

May 25th, 1858, he was united in marriage with Katherina Maria Bierbaum, at Prairie du Chien, (Wis.). To this union were born five children, Henry, Emma, Wilhelmina, Louis and Rosina. Henry and Wilhelmina died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartwig at first resided in McGregor; in 1870 they moved to Clayton, where for 15 years he patiently worked at his trade. In 1885 they moved to Garnavillo, which has been their home ever since, and where on March 17th, 1897, his wife passed away. Mr. Hartwig enjoyed good health until last winter, when he required medical aid, the disease having settled in his throat, causing a cancer. He was relieved from his intense suffering Monday forenoon, Nov. 23rd.

He leaves to mourn, three children, one grandson, a sister living at Lena, Ill., and a brother at Scales Mound, Ill. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. K. Braun, assisted by the McGregor I.O.O.F. lodge, of which he was a member.
