Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Sept. 1903.
Friday evening, Sept. 11, 1903, at 6:30 o'clock, after a painful illness of over two weeks, Mrs. Charles Mentzel peacefully went to her rest, aged 66 years and 27 days.
Miss Bernadine Zahrndt was born in Prussia, Germany, August 14th, 1837. She came to America with her parents in 1853, they coming direct to Cox Creek township, Clayton County.
On the voyage to America she became acquainted with Chas. Mentzel. He stopped in Chicago, but later came to Cox Creek twp., and here on Nov. 10th, 1855, they were united in marriage.
They lived on a farm in Cox Creek for two years, and then moved to Garnavillo, where they resided for six years, Mr. Mentzel being employed as a mason and as clerk in Chris Hagensick's store. About 1863 they moved back to a farm in Cox Creek twp. Here Mr. Mentzel became prominent in the affairs of the township and county, having represented the county in the General Assembly and served as a member of the Board of Supervisors.
The family resided in Cox Creek until 1895, when after Mr. Mentzel's death they moved to Elkader.
To Mr. and Mrs. Mentzel were born three children, Julia, now Mrs. Henry Koehn, of Elkader; Alma, now Mrs. Fred Diers, of Madison, Neb., and Martha, who has made her home with her mother. With these to mourn the beloved departed are one sister and one brother, Mrs. Henry Lange, of Cox Creek, and Louis Zahrndt,, of Elkader.
Mrs. Mentzel was a member of the Lutheran church, and endeavored to live a life devoted to the principles of righteousness, honor and virtue. Always solicitious about the care and comfort of others more than of herself, she was a rare friend, a devoted wife and mother. She will be missed by a large circle of sympathizing friends outside the immediate family.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church, being conducted by Rev. G. F. Braun, of the Lutheran church, assisted by Rev. G. W. Baxter, pastor of the Congregational church at Elkader. The large attendance more than filled the church.
