About 7:30 Saturday evening, Sept. 5th, 1903, Fred Pupke died at his residence in Elkader, after an illness of five months with paralysis, during the past three months of which he has hardly been able to recognize his family.
Fred Pupke, the son of Andrew and Dora Pupke, was born Nov. 19th, 1829, in Mecklenberg - Swerin, Germany. He came to America with his father in 1851 and settled first at Dubuque. From there they came to Garnavillo and took charge of a farm. The deceased went to live with Judge R. Noble where he met Miss Louise Russell, to whom he was married Dec. 20th, 1855, at Garnavillo.
Mr. Puepke then moved on a farm in Cox Creek twp., near Communia, where they lived about forty-three years. To them were born nine children, two sons and seven daughters. These are Mrs. Libbie Latteyer, Motor, Ia., Mrs. Lucinda Jackson and Emma and Gus Pupke, of Dubuque, Mrs. Mary Hamilton, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Martha Williams and Fred Pupke, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Ida Matson, Fort Madison, Ia., and Louise at home at Elkader, where the family moved about five years ago. There are also thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Deceased is survived by two brothers and three sisters, William, in California, Martin, in Castalia, Iowa, Mrs. Lena Schulte, at Postville, Ia., Mrs. Minnie Olke, in Nebraska, and Miss Anna, at Prairie du Chien (Wis.).
Mr. Pupke was a good husband and parent and a respected citizen in the community. The surviving wife and children have the sympathy of all in their first bereavement in their large family.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational church, Rev. G. W. Baxter officiating.
