Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Aug. 1903.

Hattie Lena Charlotte Boettcher, daughter of Chris and Wilhelmine Boettcher, was born in Cox Creek township, Feb. 10th, 1881, and died at her home in Elkader, Aug. 13th, 1903, aged 22 years, 6 months and 3 days, after an illness extending over a period of two years, during which time she was a great sufferer.

Deceased was a graduate of the Elkader High School, having finished the course with the class of 1898. She taught successfully four terms of school and was engaged to teach the fifth but was compelled to give it up on account of ill health. Gaining a little strength and being ambitious she accepted a position as clerk in one of the local stores, which position she held for several months, but this practically closed her labors. She possessed those womanly graces calculated to make her useful in life, and her untimely taking away is regretted by all

Her mother, three sisters and three brothers survive her: Mrs. Minnie Pratt, of Cresco; Mrs. Anna Glesne, of Elkader; Miss Lizzie, at home; Earnst, of Elkader; Richard, of St. Paul, a fireman on the Great Western railroad; and Henry, at Conde, S.D.

The funeral was held at the Congregational church Sunday afternoon, conducted b Rev. G. W. Baxter and Rev. Braun, the remains being laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.

The many beautiful floral offerings and the large attendance at the funeral, the church not being large enough to accommodate all, testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Thoughtful hands had hidden the horrors of the grave by making it a bed of flowers, using evergreen and the class flower of the class of '98 - the goldenrod.

The sympathy of all is extended to those who mourn.
