LUECK

Garnavillo Press, Thur., 23 April 1903.

Last Thursday another of the old settlers of Guttenberg passed away, old age being given as the immediate cause of death. Mr. B. H. Lueck has for some time been in failing health, but none of his immediate family or friends imagined for one moment that the end was so near. Last Thursday morning the old gentleman appeared to be in his usual health and spirits, but before the day had closed, he too had closed up his life's book, and had gone to reap his reward.

B. H. Lueck was born Aug. 18, 1824 at (looks like Hausstedt), Hanover, Germany. When about 29 years of age he left his native land and embarked to America, going direct to Cincinnati. He remained at that place for about two years when in 1855 he came to Guttenberg, and has made this his home from that time to the time of his death. Shortly after his arrival in Guttenberg he was married but his wife lived but a short time when she died. In 1861 he was again married, and as a result of this union eight children were born, five boys and three girls, all of whom are now dead except Henry and Joe, the two boys who for the past eight years have been conducting the business. Three years ago his wife died, and he was again left companionless in the world. When Mr. Lueck first came to Guttenberg he engaged in the wood business, but soon drifted into the lumber business, which he carried on up to the time of his retirement from business as above stated.

Mr. Lueck by his integrity and honest methods of doing business won for himself many friends that will learn with regret of his demise. The funeral services were conducted Monday from St. Mary's church, Rev. J. H. Brinkman officiating. Thus another of the Guttenberg settlers of the 50's has passed away, and all that is mortal of B. H. Lueck now lies interred in the Catholic cemetery. Peace to his ashes.
