Records are very confusing, but the above is likely the death notice of Catharine Hartung Madden, wife of John Hartung and later Thomas Madden.
Ellen Wennessey (sic - Hennessey) Madden was Thomas Madden's 1st wife (she died 1877)
Interested researchers will want to sort through the records to reconcile the conflicting dates. A sample of some records of interest are:
-1900 U.S. Census, Cox Creek twp. enumerated Thomas Madden and his wife Catharine (age 83), married 31 yrs. Also in household is son Thomas JR, age 32.
-The 1910 U.S. census shows that Thomas SR is a widower and living in the household of his son Thomas JR
-Thomas's 1923 obit states his wife was Ellen Wennessey (sic: Hennessy), married in 1866 & names children Mrs. A.J. McNamara, Mrs. John Feeney, Thomas JR, C.E. Roberts & a deceased daughter Julia. The obit appears to leave out his 2nd marriage to Catherine Madden.
-Ellen Hennessy Madden has a gravestone in Sacred Heart cemetery, died May 1877
-John Hartung & his wife Catherine are enumerated on the 1860 & 1870 census'. John Hartung died abt 1874 per his Last Will & Testament. In it he named his wife Catharine.
-Catherine Hartung & Thomas Madden were married 5/23/1878 in Clayton co. (Iowa marriage record)
-Catherine Madden is named among others in an 1881 'Original Notice' appearing in an Elkader newspaper. The defendants were being sued for payment of delinquent notes made by John Hartung (prior to his death) to the plaintiff.
