Elkader Register, Thur., 14 May 1903.
At his home in Cox Creek twp., on Thursday evening May 7th, 1903, occurred the death of Henry F. Lange, of heart failure. Deceased was born in Prussia, Germany, Dec. 9th, 1837, coming to America with his parents in 1840. They settled at Toledo, Ohio, where this young man grew up and for a time drove on the canal.
In 1857 the family came to Clayton county, and the subject of this sketch went to work to learn the trade of wagon maker with Fred Groates, at Clayton Center. In 1860 he located on the farm in Cox Creek where he made his home for 42 years.
On Jan. 15th, 1863, at Ceres, he was united in marriage with Louisa Zahrndt, who with four sons and two daughters survive to mourn the loss of husband and father. These are William and Hugo, who are employed by the Milwaukee rail road, Charles and Ray, on the home farm, Mrs. Wm. Reichart, of Littleport, and Mrs. Gustave Mentzel, of Osbourne.
Since 1891 Mr. Lange has been a sufferer from rheumatism and has been in poor health the most of the time. He was compelled to take his bed on April 16th, and has gradually failed until death relieved him from his sufferings.
Deceased in his long residence in the county made many friends and was held in high regard as an honorable man, a kind and affectionate husband and father. He will be mourned and missed in the community.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Congregational church at Elkader, Rev. Braun, of Farmersburg, and Rev. G. W. Baxter, of this place, officiating. The large attendance of friends and neighbors at the service testified as to the worth of the departed.
