Mary Ann Henry was born in County Armagh, Ireland, in Nov. 1825, and died at her home in Volga, April 24th, 1903, in her 78th year. In 1845 she was married to Samuel Hawthorne, who preceded her fifteen years this month. They came to America in 1850 and remained in Tomkins Co., N.Y., until the fall when they removed to Boone Co., Ill., and four years later they came to Sperry township, Iowa.
She was the mother of ten children, six of whom are left to mourn her loss, James Hawthorne, Agnes E. Clark, of Kansas; W. J. H., of Volga; Mary A. Herriman, of Pawnee, Okla. Ter.; Sarah E. Probert, of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and Cynthia C. Blake, of Volga. She was of a generous disposition, always ready to lend a hand in time of need and many a sufferer has been relieved by her untiring ministry. She had many sympathizers and friends through her protracted sufferings as was manifested by the many flowers that ever adorned the rooms, and also by the acts of kindness done for her. She was ready and anxious to go to her Heavenly Home. She selected the text and the psalms she wished sung at her funeral two months previous to her death.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at 2:30 p.m., on Sunday. A fine sermon was preached by Rev. McCuskey from Rev. 14:13. The decoration of the church was most befitting the occasion. Miss Nettie Duff, of highland, sang a most beautiful solo entitled, "Roses On The Other Side," which was most beautifully and sweetly rendered.
The pall bearers were A. M. Duff, Jos. Robinson, Fred Keeling, Wm. Probert, John Probert and John Copeland. She was laid to rest between Samuel Hawthorne, her husband, and little Oelia Josephine, her daughter.
The friends of the deceased wish to express their heartfelt thanks to all who gave their sympathy and help in our time of need.
"Dearest Mother, thou hast left us,
And our loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God that has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal."
