Elkader Register, Thur., 30 April 1903. Local News column.
Miss Rose E. Downie was born in Elkader, Clayton Co., Iowa, June 27th, 1868, grew to womanhood and received her education in the same place, teaching school for a number of years in Iowa and Nebraska.
At length, her mother's health began to fail and she came home and assumed the cares of the household, in which position she has fulfilled the part of a faithful daughter and sister. At the time of her mother's last illness she herself had not been well, and the shock of the accident on Feb. 4th, and the worry connected with it, threw her into nervous prostration which was soon followed by melancholia, from which she never recovered. She was taken to a branch of the noted Battle Creek sanitarium, at Moline, Ill., where everything was done that skill and faithfulness could devise, but she failed gradually until the morning of the 27th of April, when her troubled spirit passed into rest.
Miss Downie was an example of ideal young womanhood, high-minded, pure in thought and deed, self sacrificing beyond what the most exacting could require. She was a member of the Methodist church, which she joined in Wayne, Nebr., in the year 1888.
Deceased leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Lillie M. Bergeson, of Lynn Center, Ill.; four brothers, Warren W,, of Davenport, Wash.; Ray H., and John W., of Elkader; and Henry R., of Churdan, Ia., besides numerous friends.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational church, Rev. G. W. Baxter, the pastor, officiating.
