Elkader Argus, Wed., 27 Jan. 1903.
Wm. Schellhammer and family became residents of Monona about a year ago, coming from Giard township, where his father and family reside. Will's marriage has not proven a happy one; there was more or less friction between he and his wife, over which he has brooded for some time. He was industrious, a good worker, and was well thought of by those best acquainted with him.
Sunday he had a strenuous time at his home, and undoubtedly this had much to do with his determination to sever his relations with the family and the world. On Monday forenoon he took a rope and making a slip and noose, placed it around his neck and tied the other end over a piece of lumber on the east end of the open stairway and jumped clear of the stairs. His weight was about 180 lbs., and his leap to death undoubtedly broke his neck. When first found he was gasping in the last throes of death, but too far gone to be saved. He was past 44 years of age. - Monona Leader.
