Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Mar. 1890.

About 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 13th, our community was startled by the announcement that Mrs. H. Luers had suddenly expired, and time only confirmed the report. For four months past the deceased had been a great sufferer from nervous prostration, and with neuralgia of the heart, but it was not realized that the end was so near. On Thursday morning about six o'clock, she had dressed as usual and had ate something, and while complaining of great difficulty in breathing, she went out of doors thinking to get relief. She had gone but a few steps when the fatal attack came and she fell backward to the walk. She was promptly taken into the house and medical attendance summoned, but it was of no avail, and with only a partial consciousness after her fall, she sank peacefully to rest.

Dora Sophia Schirmer was born April 8th, 1822, at Lithen, Hanover, Germany, where on June 10th, 1847, she was united in marriage to Herman Luers. They came to the United States in 1851, making their home at Cincinnati until 1855, when they came to Clayton county, settling near Communia, and about four years ago moved to Elkader. Of a family of ten children, two sons and five daughters are now living, and with the exception of Mrs. Dr. Lewis, of Canton, S.D., were enabled to be present and pay their last sad tribute of love to a fond mother. Mrs. Luers' many excellent qualities and her residence in the county, had gathered about her many friends who will be pained upon reading these lines, and will deeply sympathize with the bereaved husband and sons and daughters who are called now to mourn for a devoted wife and a true mother.

The funeral took place from the family residence at Elkader, on Saturday, March 15th, Rev. G. N. Keniston, officiating.

"It is not death to close
The eye long dimmed by tears,
And wake in glorious repose
To spend eternal years."

"It is not death to bear,
The wrench that sets us free
From dungeon chains, to breathe the air
Of boundless liberty."

It is not death to fling
Aside the sinful dust,
And rise on strong, exulting wing
To live among the just."
