Memorial services were held for Dr. Sue Ellen Follon, 56, Cedar Falls, formerly of Volga, Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at Maucker University Union, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She died of cancer Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
She was born June 22, 1942, in Volga, Iowa, the daughter of Oliver Franklin and Mary Rebecca Moore Follon. She received her B.S. degree in Biology from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1963, her master's degree in college student personnel services from UNI in 1970 and her Ed.D. in higher education administration from Drake University in 1983. Dr. Follon was the first woman vice president at UNI, having served as vice president of educational and student services since 1985.
Previous positions held include executive director of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, 1976 to 1985; and assistant head of students and coordinator of student activities at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, 1970 to 1976. At the time of her death, she was the official university representative to the National Retention Project of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Sue was a member of National Association of Student Personnel Admistrators, Iowa Student Personnel Association and Phi Delta Kappa. She had made more than 150 presentations in the past 20 years to local, regional, state and national organizations. Among honors Dr. Follon received were commendation for Outstanding Contributions to the Progress of Women with the Salute Award in 1992 and being named Iowa's Outstanding Young Woman of the Year in 1976. She was named Outstanding Alumni in 1977 by Central Community School in Elkader.
Survivors include her parents, Oliver and Mary Follon of Volga; three brothers, James of Omaha, Neb., and Mark and Craig, both of Volga; and a sister, Joan of New York City. Also surviving are her close personal friend, Patricia Geadelmann of Cedar Rapids; and three nieces, Jamie D. Welch and Stacey and Tara Lynn Follon.
