The saddest part of our duty as chronical of the passing events, is that of announcing the death of Mr. Otto Blaul, which occurred on the 4th inst., of quick consumption. Deceased was 45 years of age, and leaves a wife, six small children and a circle of friends to mourn his death. He was a worthy member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of this place, and the funeral on Tuesday was conducted by that order. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. G. Whitford. OBITUARY.

BLAUL- Of quick consumption, December 04th, 1882, at Volga City, Iowa, Otto Blaul.

He was born February 22nd, 1839, in Rhine Bavaria, Germany. Came to the United States, in the year 1851, when only fifteen years of age. One year after, he engaged as seaman on a merchant vessel for a trading voyage of two years to the West Indies and South America ports. Returning he enlisted in the United States Navy and went on cruise to St. Helena, Madagascar, Australia, Japan and many ports on the South and Central American coasts. On the breaking out of the war of the rebellion, he re-enlisted on the United States Steamer Bainbridge, May 09th, 1861, which steamer took three prizes, two schooners and one steamer, while trying to run the blockade. Being discharged on July 05th, 1862, he re-enlisted again on United States Steamer Commodore Barney, served on that boat until October 09th, 1863, and was honorably discharged. While in the Navy, he took part in many naval engagements. He was on a gunboat on the Potomac, which was damaged by the explosion of a torpedo under it, and at which time he received severe internal injuries, from which he never recovered. After the war he came west and entered into the employ of R. & E. Meuth, of Buena Vista, Iowa, and was afterwards a partner of the firm of Meuth & Blaul, Volga City. He was married in Dubuque county, November 01st, 1868, to Miss Ellen Augusta Stoddard, who now is a widow with six interesting children.

Mr. Blaul moved to Volga City in the summer of 1872, and engaged in the merchantile business. He was an honest dealer, always willing to help and aid in all good benevolent and charitable enterprises.

He became a member of the Order of Odd Fellows and joined Volga Lodge, No. 321, August 12th, 1876, at the time when the Lodge was organized, and was a good faithful and worthy member. He held several offices in the Lodge, done his duty faithfully and well. His bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of all who know them in this vicinity. His presence in the Lodge room will be sadly missed.
