Died- John Paul Thoma, died at his residence in Garnavillo, on the 2nd inst., of old age.
Deceased was born in Welszenstadt, Bavaria, January 20th, 1802, being 80 years old at the time of his death. He had always, up to within a few days of his death, enjoyed good health, and bade fair to live for many years to come.
He was first married to Miss Elizabeth Schmidt, in Germany, and afterwards, in 1852 came to the United States, locating at Garnavillo, where he resided up to the time of his death. His first wife died Jan. 6th, 1862, leaving him and 13 children to mourn her loss, seven of whom, among them Mrs. W. Schmidt of this place, are still living.
In April, 1868, Mr. Thoma was married to Anna Clara Krueger, who survives him. Deceased was always an energetic man, and had much to do with the early prosperity of Garnavillo, being among its foremost men in promoting all public enterprises. He was greatly beloved by all who knew him, and his death causes much sorrow among his friends.

Mr. Paulus Thoma, of Garnavillo, died at that place on Tuesday morning, at the advanced age of 80 years. He was the father of Mrs. Wolfgang Schmidt, of this place. Mr. T. was born in Bavaria, and came to this county a number of years ago, locating at Garnavillo, and has been closely identified with the growth and prosperity of our sister town on the prairie. The funeral occurred on Wednesday, and was very largely attended by friends and relatives. He was buried in the Garnavillo cemetery.
