Elkader Register, Fri., 25 Feb. 1881. Volga City News column.

Died- Emerett F., wife of James Hawthorne, died on the 16th of February, aged 27 years, 3 months and 5 days.

Once more the grim messenger of death has claimed its victim in this place; not from the aged; nor from the young - but from among those that are in the prime of life. Taken one that it seemed as though we could not part with, a dear wife, mother, daughter, Sister; we have not at our command words suitable to express our feeling - but so it is, we must kiss the rod that afflicts, and bow the head and say, "it is the Lord's doing and His will be done."

She left a husband, a daughter 5 years old, and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. She was born in Cox Creek township, this county, Sept. 7th, 1853; was married to James Hawthorne of Sperry, Sept. 11th, 1870. She was of a very kind disposition, always obliging, ready and willing to do her part; of a studious nature, apt to teach, and was a fine scholar and one of Clayton county's best school teachers. She commenced teaching at the age of fourteen years, and taught nine terms, until she earned in that way over $500.

She was the second daughter of G. S. Peck, of Cox Creek, who is well known throughout the county by all the old settlers of the same.

She will be sadly missed at her home by her bereaved husband, by the church and society, of which she was a leading member, also by the community in which she has lived. She was a kind neighbor, her advice was always good and sought after. During the past year she joined the Presbyterian church of this place, and her religious character has always shed an influence for good in all her actions. She was a beloved member of the W.T.C.U.

Her last sickness was not of long duration (only about ten days) but very severe. During her sickness she evidenced to all, that her confidence was in her Saviour and her God. She was sensible to the very last moment. Jesus was precious to her, and she went away to be with Him she loved so well, because He first loved her.

Her funeral was largely attended on Friday, at the Union church, conducted by Rev. John Brown, who preached a good discourse, and paid an excellent tribute to the departed. The public school attended the funeral, and many a silent tear was shed.

Note: She is buried as Amorette F. Hawthorne, 1853 - 1881, in Hill Crest Cemetery.
