Elkader Register, Fri., (looks like 16 or 18th), 1881.
On the morning of Sept. 7th, 1881, Mr. John Krambeer, of Clayton Center, died very suddenly, and under what were thought suspicious circumstances. He was buried on Thursday. On Saturday Coroner Penfield, at the request of Mr. Charles Schultz and others of that place, held an inquest and post-mortem examination, which developed the following facts:
The body was ex-humed, and under the directions of the Coroner, Drs. Purdy, Wheeland, Beals and Dufin, made a post-mortem examination, but did not find anything to indicate foul play.
The evidence showed that there had been some trouble in the family respecting the property, some hard words had passed between the wife and husband. Mr. K., was as well as usual the forenoon before he died, and worked at ploughing. He went to bed in his room, (he having slept alone since the 2nd inst.) the remainder of the family sleeping up-stairs. No unusual noise was heard in his room until a little after daylight, when, his son John testifies, he heard his father breathing heavy. He dressed and went down to his father's room. Mr. K. put out his hand and said he was dying, and wished to die in peace, and said good-bye. Asked for Ida and mother and wanted them to come to him. Took his wife's hands and asked her forgiveness. He died about 7 o'clock a.m. The family was alone with him at the time of his death. Mr. Uecker, a neighbor, had been there, but had gone to Mr. Crary's to summon his daughter, at the time of his death.
The jury returned the following:
VERDICT.
State of Iowa, Clayton County, SS.An inquisition holden in Read township, in said county, on the 10th day of September, A.D. 1881, before W. A. Penfield, coroner of said county, upon the body of John Krambeer, there lying dead, by the jurors, upon their oaths do say after having heard the evidence, and examined said body, we do find that the deceased came to his death in a way and manner unknown to the jury.
Given under our hands at the time and place of said inquisition, above mentioned.
(signed) F. Buckman, F. W. Diers and J. C. Hagensick.
The people seem to be generally satisfied with the result of the inquest, and the family entirely blameless in the matter.
