Elkader Register, Fri., 19 Aug. 1881.

Obituary: Herman Henry Schumacher, of Garnavillo.

On Thursday last, Mr. Henry Schumacher died at his home near Garnavillo, of apoplexy.

The deceased was born at Bruchhoefen, in the Kingdom of Hanover, December 1st, 1821, making him nearly 60 years of age at the time of his death.

He came to the United States in 1846, landing at New Orleans, where he remained but a short time, and then came to Iowa, locating in Clayton county. He first engaged in farming, having purchased a farm near Garnavillo. He sold that and then removed to Read twp., where he remained a time, and then went to McGregor, and associating himself with J. L. Hagensick, built the brewery at that place. He was there but a year, and then went back to a farm, locating near Postville. Later he traded this farm to the heirs of H. C. Meyer, for the Garnavillo brewery, which he was operating at the time of his death. Mr. Schumacher was a man of many virtues, honest and upright in all his dealings, and ever ready to help his more unfortunate brethren. He was honored and respected by all who knew him.

By his death he leaves a wife and 7 children, most of whom are grown to manhood and womanhood, to mourn the loss of a loving husband and a kind father.

His funeral, which occurred on Saturday last, was one of the largest ever held in Garnavillo, friends and relatives from all parts of the county being present. After services by F. W. Seifert, of Clayton Center, his remains were laid away in the Garnavillo cemetery, to await the final resurrection. May he rest in peace.
