Elkader Register, Fri., 19 Aug. 1881.
AN OLD VETERAN GONE.
On Thursday of last week, at Guttenberg, occurred the death of a man who has witnessed probably the best display of generalship and heaviest battles of the 19th century.
Fred. Kretzmeier was one of the army that under the lead of Napoleon 1st, made the invasion of Russia in 1812. Of their triumphal march through that vast empire to its capital, and their retreat, many of our readers are well acquainted. Napoleon entered Russia with 500,000 men, and came out with but about 40,000. Mr. Kretzmeier served under Napoleon until the latter was sent to the Isle of St. Elba. Mr. K's death was caused by old age.
