Funeral services for Helen Frances Berns, 91, were held Tuesday, July 2, 1996, in St. Mary's Catholic Church at Lamont with Rev. Dennis Juhl officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons: Greg Berns, Michael Fischer, Mark Berns, Paul Berns, Loras Berns and Stephen Berns. Interment was in St. Albert's Cemetery east of Lamont. A Parish Rosary was held Monday evening.

Helen Frances Berns was born in Cox Creek Township, Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Augustus and Ada B. Hines Dillon. She was united in marriage to Laurence Berns August 14, 1924, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. To this union were born five children: Larry, Norma, Francis, Daniel and David. They farmed all their working lives in northeast Iowa until moving into Lamont. Laurence died March 24, 1977. Helen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamont and the Rosary Society. Helen Berns died Saturday, June 29, 1996, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader where she had resided since January.

Survivors include her five children: Larry of Elkader, Norma (Mrs. Ambrose) Fischer of Edgewood, Francis of Spring Valley, Ohio, Daniel of High Point, Wis., and David of Edgerton, Wis.; 30 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Grace Olson of Volga.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Laurence; one great-grandson, Aaron; two sisters, Adalaid and Marie; and six brothers, Lloyd, Wesley, Clair, Paul, George and Reid.
