Elkader Register, Fri., 25 Nov. 1881. In the Elkport column.
It is reported that one of the Penrod boys, who make their home in Elk township, was shot and severely injured, last Friday evening, by a farmer residing between Colesburg and Millville. As near as your reporter can learn, the following are the facts in the case. The farmer had missed a quarter of beef from his storehouse, and watched to see if the thieves would come for more. It was not long before his vigilance was rewarded by seeing Penrod come in, shoulder a quarter of beef and start off, and just about that time the farmer's gun went off, and a charge of shot struck Penrod in the side, from the effects of which Penrod has since died.
