Mrs. Arnold (Bernice) Backes, 81, of Guttenberg died Monday, June 2, 1986 at Guttenberg Care Center.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg and are to be conducted by the Rev. L. R. Lechner.

Burial will be in Guttenberg City Cemetery with the following pallbearers: Merlin Geuder, Robert Walke, Bill Walke, Neil Walke, Daniel Walke and Harlan Backes.

Honorary pallbearers are Mary Tujetsch, Ora Schroeder, Bess Murray, Bernita Graybill, Elma Lee, Manetta Keefer, Della Steen, Grace Drenkhahn, Laura Kramer, Phyllis Allyn, Mildred Hageman and Larene Backhaus.

Visitation will be at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Bernice Amanda Augusta Backes was born in rural Guttenberg on Oct. 10, 1904, a daughter of Herman and Bertha (Blachaine) Walke. She was married Sept. 11, 1929 at St. John's Church to Arnold Backes, who survives.

Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Carol) Tomkins of Guttenberg and Mrs. Harry (Marilyn) Nielsen of Elkader, and one son, Gary Backes of Guttenberg; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ilo Geuder, and three brothers, Harold Walke, Harvey Walke and Herman Walke, all of Guttenberg.

She was preceded by three brothers and one sister.
