On Wednesday, March 27th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Gehring, near Elgin, occurred the death of Milo P. Clark, one of the pioneers of the county.
Mr. Clark was born in Masonville, N.Y., November 30th, 1824, his parents being natives of that state. At the age of 16 he commenced to learn the carpenter trade. In 1848 he came west, first settling at Dubuque, Ia., from thence in 1849 he went to St. Anthony, Minn., where he built the first frame house. In 1850 Mr. Clark crossed the plains to California, where he remained about a year, returning to New York by water. In 1852 he came back to Iowa, settling on the farm in Wagner twp., where he has ever since lived the life of a hard working, respected citizen.
He was married Nov. 20, 1849 to Mary Ann Lunbeck, of Ohio, and to them were born five children, two dying in infancy. Those living are Jacob, Seth and Mrs. Gehring.
The funeral was held on Friday, the Baptist minister from Elgin officiating. Burial was in the cemetery on the farm which was the scene of Mr. Clark's active and useful life. Thus has passed away another widely known pioneer citizen, one who left his mark on the community in which he lived.
