We sympathize with the family of our old friend and neighbor, Wm. Koth, who was killed at Monona last week by the train. It was a sad affair.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 11 Aug. 1910.

Last week we mentioned the serious injury of Wm. Koth, of Wagner township, at Monona, on the morning of the 4th inst.

Mr. Koth had delivered a load of grain at the Wellman feed mill and was driving toward the main part of town. Just as he approached the track the west bound passenger train came around the curve. The engineer, seeing the danger, whistled repeatedly, but Mr. Koth failed to get clear of the track in time. The engine struck the wagon and ground it to pieces, throwing Mr. Koth against and under the engine, fracturing his skull and crushing one of his legs just above the ankle so that it had to be amputated at once.

Every effort was made toward his recovery, but the terrible injury and shock was more than he could rally from and he died Saturday morning. The funeral services were held from the home in Wagner township, Monday, and were largely attended.

He was the son of Joseph and Minnie Koth and was born in Giard township October 18th, 1855. Later the family settled in Farmersburg township, where he grew to manhood. May 29th, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Buckmann. The young couple settled on the homestead which he purchased of his father. In 1891 he purchased their present farm in Wagner township. He was greatly interested in agricultural and live stock enterprises, always working for the best results. He was kind and obliging, always ready to assist his fellow men. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Clayton County Agricultural Society, also a member of the Board of Trustees of Wagner township.

He is survived by his wife and five children two sons and three daughters. One son and two daughters are married and all are settled near the parental home; one son and one daughter are with the mother at the homestead; also five sisters and three brothers, of whom Mrs. Chas. E. Sebastian, Fred and Herman reside in Monona; Mrs. Frank Tanner, at Hampton, Iowa; Henry, at Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Mary Buckmann, at Pawtucket, Rhode Island; Mrs. Emma Leonard and Mrs. Tillie Norton, at San Francisco, Cal., besides a large number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His was an active and useful life.
