L/Cpl Carrol G. Keehner
VOLGA: Carrol Gene Keehner, son of Mrs. Velma Kelly and Carrol George Keehner, was born Aug. 20, 1948, at Mesa, Ariz. He was baptized in the Christian faith May 30, 1959, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and confirmed Nov. 18, 1962, at St Paul Lutheran Church, Volga.After completion his secondary education at the Central Community High School, Elkader, in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps June 24 of the same year, He completed his basic training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and was then stationed at Camp Lejune, N.C. He left for Vietnam Sept. 20, 1967 and served as a member of First Platoon, I Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, reaching the rank of lance corporal.
Following enlistment in April on 120 day delay due to high school graduation, he was accepted June 24, 1966, left for over seas Sept 20 1967. He had just returned to Vietnam on the 20th of December from futher jungle warfare training in the Philippines when he was struck by firearms near the demilitarized zone.
The body was escorted by Cpl. Ronnie Stroschein, U.S.M.C., of Elkader. Cpl Stroschein and John Gerken, Elkader, had enlisted with L/Cpl. Keehner at the same time.
Surviving are his father, Carrol George Keehner, Maquoketa; his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Kelly, Volga; three brothers, Gary L., Chad R., and Kim K. Keehner, and one sister Penny Sue Keehner, all of Volga; his paternal grandfather Verni Keehner, Garnavillo; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Benjamin Glessner, Rocky Ford, Colo,; and step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mara, Dubuque, and other relatives.
Memorial services were held Sunday from the Witt chapel, Elkader, to the St. Paul Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. The pastor, Rev. Andrew S. Olsen, officiated.
Mrs. Fred Gernand, organist, accompanied the vocalists. Mrs. Gary Jellings and Mrs. Roger Erickson, who sang the selection “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less then Jesus’ Blood and Righteousness.”
U.S.M.C. casket bearers from Waterloo were 1st Sgt, Bush, Gy. Sgt. Purcell, Sgt. Marmon, Pvt. Oliphant, S/Sgt Ellingbal, H.M.I. Weber and S/Sgt Abrams.
At the military rites service Robert Nesteby, Elkader, served as bugler.
Interment was in the Hill Crest Cemetery, Volga

Marine From Volga Dies In Viet.
Volga - Marine Lance Cpl. Carroll Keehner, 19, of Volga, has been reported killed in action in Vietnam.
Word of his death was received yesterday by his mother, Mrs. William Kelly, of Volga.
Cpl. Keehner died of a gunshot wound in the chest Thursday near Quang Tri.
