Mrs. Alice A. Whitley, daughter of William H. and Josephine E. Hetzman Leonard was born Nov. 30, 1878, at Elkader, Iowa, and died July 14, 1955, after a lingering illness.
On Feb. 21, 1911, she was married to F. M. Whitley at Elkader. Mr. Whitley died in 1931.
Mrs. Whitley spent all her life in Elkader except for ten years in Waukegan, Ill. She was a member of the Service Star, Royal Neighbors, Congregational Ladies Guild and the Congregational Christian Church of Elkader.
She is survived by two sisters and five brothers, Mrs. E. R. (Rebecca) Elvidge, Sioux City; Mrs. Albert (Clara) Welch, Waukegan, Ill.; Frank, Henry and Ed Leonard, Elkader; W. F. (Gene) Leonard, Cedar Falls, and Tom Leonard of Waterloo. One brother, John L. Leonard of Arlington, preceded her in death in 1952.
Services were held July 16, at the Congregational Church with the Rev. David G. Howell officiating. Burial was in the East Side Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Gilbert Leonard, Wayne Leonard, Milton Leonard, Donald Leonard, Harold Whitley and Robert Olson.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Elvidge, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. F. Leonard and family, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Leonard and family, Waterloo; Mrs. Gordon Olson, Robert Olson, Mrs. Eva Burrack and Lotta Gratke, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Whitley, Harold Whitley and Clyde E. Ostrander, Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Leonard, Waverly, and Mrs. Walter Lundt of Traer, Iowa.
