John Peter Schug was born December 26, 1840, at Trimsback, Rhenish Prussia Germany. At the age of fourteen he was confirmed in his home church after he had received the religious instructions. He remained at home until he was married to Elizabeth Gerrmann. This was on December 16, 1861.

In 1864 he left his native country and came to the United States. Several times he changed his place of home while living here. His first home was in New Jersey. After somewhat more than a year he came to Ohio. He remained here only a short time, about six months. Finally he came to this part of the country and settled down on a farm about seven miles west of here, from where he moved to a place three miles south and finally took charge of a place two and one half miles south-west of town, where he since 1876 lived for a number of years. Twenty-two years ago he retired to our town.

Of his children, ten grew up to manhood and womanhood. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Friederick, however, preceded the father in death. Those surviving are: Mrs. Katherine Fabert, of Guttenberg; Peter, Charles and John, of this place; Albert, of Arlington; Mrs. Mary Theisinger, of Sumner; Mrs. Louise Sauerbry, Mrs. Rose Liebau, both of Waverly, and Lena, at home.

A memorable day in his life was the day of his golden wedding, which he celebrated six and a half years ago. It was a day of rejoicing and thanksgiving for the kind guidance of his God, who had led him at the side of his beloved wife through many a day.

As soon as he came to this country he joined the Lutheran church at St. Sebald and when the congregation at Strawberry Point was organized, he became a member of the same. He always took much interest in the welfare of his church and always lent a helping hand in all its undertakings.

On March 13th of last year, he was suddenly attacked by an apoplectic stroke, from which, however, he somewhat rallied. Put is was a sign that the end of his life was not far off. About two weeks ago his condition grew worse. He knew that his end was coming and was prepared for the final call of his Master. On Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 he departed this life at an age of seventy-seven years, two months and twenty-two years.

Besides his mourning widow, he is survived by four sons, five daughters, twenty-six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one brother, Fred, of this place.

May he rest in peace.
