John T. Porter, son of John and Hannah Shipley Porter, was born in the city of Baltimore, Maryland, July 25, 1828 and died on the old homestead near Littleport, Iowa, May 9.912, aged 83 years, 9 months and 14 days.
the deceased spent the first four years of his life in the city of his birth, then with his parents moved to Janesville, Ohio, from which place the Porter family emigrated to Iowa in the year 1854, when the subject of this sketch was twenty-seven years of age.
In the month of February, 1858, he was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Beatty. To this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom survive him,the wife preceded him to the great beyond four years previous. Twelve grandchildren and two great=grandchildren also remain to mourn their loss.
Mr. Porter suffered a stroke of apoplexy in the year 1903 which so paralyzed the left side that rendered him almost a helpless invalid for many years. Mr. Porter was kindly and tenderly cared for by his son George and family, with whom he made his home for a period of six and half years. Mrs. Mary Wooldridge and family have from time to time visited and by their sympathy and kindly ministrations brightened many hours of the painful sufferer. To such a sufferer death must have been a welcome visitor. The deceased had been a member of Asbury church for many years.
The services were held Saturday forenoon at the Stone schoolhouse on Bear Creek, Rev. J.W. Turner officiating. Internment was made at Littleport.
